Oil Spill

The Oil Spill
Most people are concerned with the oil spill that happened less than a month ago. Many are concerned with what will happen with the sea animals and their environment. I also think more action should be taken towards those who have suffered. President Obama tells how he is doing as much as possible for the oil spill and that no one needs to point fingers. On a personal note I was scared to death when I heard the news about the oil spill. My husband was in the Gulf of Mexico only a hundred miles away from the incident. I had my family calling making the matter worse because of lack of knowledge. But this is something I think no one will forget like Hurricane Katrina. I hope the animal species will survive and recover from the horrific event.

H.A. & Margret Rey Digital Collection

We all knew Curious Geroge as a child, well I did. I remember reading the stories about the curious monkey who always got into something and was very smart. I didn't know who idea it was to make a monkey do human like things. I found out on the Special Collections list and that they wrote many other children books. H.A. and Margret Rey. They always had other publications such as financial and legal documents. The couple loved working together and did for many years.

AAEC Editorial Cartoon Digital Collection
I went to the website to learn about the special collections.I found that the Editioral Cartoon was very interesting. I found that it was created in the 1950s and 1960s. I think its important to know about this collection because some like me didn’t know the University had this going on and I think it’s a great opportunity for those who isn’t very academically involved. The collections represents all kinds of cartoonists and cartoon styles. Through cartoons that represent polticial ideas it gives a better understanding to what is being said or trying to be said. I’m not politcial at all so I think this a great way to learn history of politics and the scandals that have happened. One cartoon showed the Watergate scandal , which made me interested in President Nixon and the whole scandal and I wanted to know who was all involved in the process and what happened in results.

I decided to do my cultural essay assignment on the the Centennial.I made this decision based off the fact I wanted to know more about the history of the college I'm attending. One thing that caught my attention was the old band uniform from the 1960s. I loved band in high school and met many of close friends. The marching band uniform was a tribute to the Scottish heritage of former University President William D. McCain. I also saw the ROTC Drill Team uniform from the 1960s. I also learned about the first president W.H. Smith and the first acting President, which was Joseph Anderson Cook and the library is named after him. Mrs. Florence Burrow Pope was very important in that she is the reason for the black and gold colors we have come to love and support. She submitted suggestions for which is now our school colors. The centennial exhibit is something I think all USM students should go and see I learned so much more about the University.
